FIRST LEVEL: IN RACK FIRE PROTECTION

The first level of data center fire protection is at the rack-level. In data centers specifically, fire detection in the early stages can be difficult, as many electrical components are enclosed.

This means a fire can go undetected until it’s become a larger hazard. By implementing in rack-level fire protection, data centers can extinguish fires at an incipient stage, minimizing the potential for a larger fire to spread.

Common fire protection methods at the rack level include very early detection with our Cease Fire pre-engineered and automatic fire suppression systems. These systems are installed within the equipment, where they can detect and suppress fires before they are sensed by the larger room or building level fire suppression system. These rapid acting systems work very effectively to minimize any damage sustained to sensitive equipment within a data center.

SECOND LEVEL: ROOM LEVEL FIRE PROTECTION

This second level of data center fire protection is where NFPA’s standards begin to apply.

Double interlocked Pre-action Fire sprinkler systems designed to prevent accidental discharge of water are most commonly used to protect data centers wherein the detection system within the room triggers a series of action which include sounding of alarms, interlocking auxiliary equipment as per the facilities predetermined cause & effect matrix and eventually signaling the pre action system to activate upon confirmation of an actual fire scenario.

There are also cylinder based suppression systems wherein inert gas or clean agents are used to extinguish fires. The benefit of a system like this is that it will prevent collateral damage to sensitive equipment housed in a data center which could occur by the use of water for extinguishment. THIRD LEVEL: BUILDING LEVEL FIRE PROTECTION

The third level of data center fire protection is the building level. This level of fire protection is focused on keeping the entire building and any people in it, safe. Methods used to achieve building-level fire protection in data centers include:

• Fire Hydrant Systems.
• Wet Sprinkler Systems for all areas excluding the data centre halls.
• Outdoor transformer protection.
• Foam systems for fuel storage area
• Smoke detection & manual fire alarm systems.
• Public address systems.
• Portable and hand held fire extinguishers.
• Fire doors & partitions.
• Specific requirements based on the local building codes and recommendations of the AHJ / Insurer etc.
